Not Even a Cargo Ship's Collision Could Wake Him From His Slumber

As tensions throughout Europe rise, most individuals, especiallyNorwegians, find themselves on high alert.

But not Johan Helberg.

When a 10,000-tonne cargo vessel deviated from its path and came to rest in his front yard yesterday morning, he remained calm. Actually, he did not stir from sleep at all.

Looking completely unfazed, he stated: “If the ship had been positioned five meters farther south, it would have entered the bedroom instead, which would have been decidedly unpleasant.”

The cargo vessel NCL Salten, registered under the Cypriot flag, was en route from Trondheim Fjord to Orkanger when it deviated from its intended path.

Helberg became aware of the 443-foot ship in his garden solely after neighbor Jostein Jorgensen approached him with a knock at the door.

Johan informed the Guardian: “I approached the window and was greatly surprised to spot a large vessel.”

'I had to tilt my head back to glimpse the top of it. It seemed surreal. Usually, vessels navigate either left or right as they enter the fjord.'

'However, this moved directly forward. It was extremely near to the house.'

Jostein isn't a particularly deep sleeper and was awakened by the ship as it slammed into the shore at maximum velocity.

He stated: "I was certain he had gone out, yet there wasn’t even a hint of activity. I pressed the doorbell numerous times with no result."

Fortunately, all 16 crew members aboard, comprising Norwegians, Lithuanians, Ukrainians, and Russians, emerged unharmed, with no reports of oil leaks.

A probe is currently underway to determine if either a technical malfunction or human mistake occurred.

Bente Hetland, CEO of the shipping company NCL, stated that there was 'no cause for suspicion that this was deliberate'.

A member of the team who was on the bridge at the time is being detained as a potential suspect.

Regarding the vessel's situation, attempts should only be undertaken to dislodge it during high tide.
